Breathe

Written after my son was born and two years after my father died, this book is based on a dream I had in which my father told me to “cherish breath.” It is a one-sided conversation with my father about what it means to be alive and what it means to be gone from this world.

Position & Relation

This book is my formal farewell to the rivers and mountains of Woodstock, New York, which I left in 2004. It includes one night journal, my first collection of writing at 3:15 am, one collection written from a spot on Overlook Mountain, one collection of poems written without prepositions, and one group of poems on displacement called “12 Poems That Were Never Written.”

the desire to meet with the beautiful

The first half of the desire to meet with the beautiful, "Mirza's Cave," was completed in 1994 after my return from India and well precedes the writing of India Poem. It focuses on India the subcontinent’s use of sacred texts and the practice of oral transmission from teacher to student. The book's second half, "Paper Sea," completed in 2002, describes a nearly twenty year commitment to the Greek island of Paros and its early Cycladic culture and begins an exploration into the early cultural contacts between ancient Greece and ancient India.

India Poem

Written in Woodstock, New York in 1997, is, on the surface, a meditation on sharing a name with a subcontinent. It is also a tribute to the people I met while I was in India. It was entirely created during nine months of pregnancy with my son.
